Parece que Mari quería pasear. La diosa salía lentamente de su cueva del monte Amboto.
Había ordenado a las nubes que le colocaran alfombra de nieve porque era el 24 de diciembre y quería recorrer sus territorios.
Cuando andaba con sus pasos mágicos, apenas rozaba el suelo con los pies.
Mari era la dueña de los vientos, de la nieve, del agua y las tormentas, de los pájaros y de las flores.
A su paso nacían las margaritas en primavera, las lagartijas se estiraban al sol en verano o amarilleaban las hojas en otoño.
Pero a Mari le gustaba sobre todo el invierno para calentarse en su cueva mientras hilaba con hilos de oro una tela interminable.
Aquella tarde estaba contenta.
Pensaba danzar descalza mientras los copos de nieve caían sobre ella.
Desde la cima de su monte sagrado, había contemplado toda Euskal Herría.
Porque Mari tenía ojos mágicos y su mirada atravesaba los bosques y los valles.
No podía perder el tiempo. El invierno había empezado y las horas de luz eran muy pocas.
Se quedó un poco extrañada al comprobar que alguien se le había adelantado en el paseo. – Será un rebaño de ciervos, pensó. Son muchas las huellas que van en la misma dirección.
Y decidió averiguar hacia dónde se dirigían. Anduvo deprisa, mirando a su alrededor… y todo estaba vacío. Dobló un recodo del camino y se quedó sorprendida al encontrarse, rodeando la casa del leñador, a los galtzagorris, las lamias, las sorgiñes y muchos más, que miraban a través de la ventana, en absoluto silencio.
-¿Qué ocurre?, preguntó Mari.
– ¡Silencio!, dijo Gargantúa, colocando uno de sus enormes dedazos en la boca.
-¡Está naciendo un niño!, dijeron a coro las sorgiñes. Y como se ha puesto a nevar de esta manera, no ha sido posible buscar una comadrona para que ayude al Ama a tener su bebé. Solo la acompaña el Aita.
– Bueno, pensó Mari, el Aita se las apañará. Pero le entró remordimiento por haber organizado aquella nevada tan enorme que dejaba aislados a los caseríos del monte.
Se fue acercando a la ventana, y todos le iban dejando paso al sentir su poder divino.
Ya en primera fila, Mari vio al Aita, ayudando al Ama, que estaba tan malita, dando a luz a su hijo.
Al poco rato, nació un niño potxolo y regordete, que se puso a llorar en cuanto llegó al mundo.
Todos los espectadores aplaudieron de alegría. Mari llamó a la puerta y salió el Aita con su niño envuelto en un mantón.
-¿Qué hacéis aquí?, preguntó sorprendido.
-¡Biotza!, dijo la diosa llena de ternura, cogiendo al niño en sus brazos.
-Hemos venido a ayudarte, añadió Mari.
Y enseguida repartió los trabajos entre sus amigos.
A las sorgiñes les indicó que controlaran la salud del Ama… Y ellas buscaron las mejores hierbas y le cocieron pócimas sanadoras, que le produjeran mucha leche para amamantar al nene.
Las lamias, que viven en las aguas, tenían que lavar los pañales, para que siempre estuvieran limpios.
A los galtzagorris les ordenó cortar la leña del bosque para que el Aita tuviera tiempo de jugar con su hijo.
A los iratxoak y los mamarros, como son duendecillos un poco traviesos, les encargó hacerle carantoñas al chiquillo cuando llorara.
A Gargantúa le dejó jugar a comérselo a besos.
El Aita y el Ama estaban muy emocionados y no sabían cómo darle las gracias a Mari y toda su cuadrilla.
-¿Podéis ser los padrinos de nuestro niño aunque seáis mágicos?
-¡Claro que sí!, contestaron todos.
Y pensaron ellos: -Entonces le tenemos que hacer un buen regalo.
Las lamias, acostumbradas al agua, quisieron enseñarle a nadar… Los galtzagorris, que eran muy mañosos, le fabricaron muchos juguetes. Y Mari… ¿Qué le regalaría Mari?
Como era la diosa del día y de la noche, decidió que, a partir de ese momento, le iba a regalar a su ahijado un poquito más de luz cada tarde.
El bautizo del niño Olentzero se celebró con mucha ceremonia. Mari acudió vestida de destellos y resplandecía arrastrando los pañales de oro de su ahijado, que iba dejando un reguero de alegría por donde tocaba. La acompañaba una procesión de sorguiñes, lamias, galtzagorris, iratxoas y mamarros, que también se consideraban sus madrinas y padrinos… Y, un poco rezagado, Gargantúa, que era tan gordo y tan lento.
A partir de entonces, cada 24 de diciembre se reunían con la familia todos los padrinos y madrinas del pequeño Olentzero. Cada uno traía su obsequio. Mari venía con sus minutitos de luz, que había ido recogiendo desde el día de San Juan. Los galtzagorris le traían un regalo cada uno. Y como eran muchos, Olentzero tenía un juguete nuevo para cada día .
Al cabo de unos años había tantísimos juguetes en la casa que ya no podía entrar nadie. Hasta que Aita se enfadó porque ya no le cabía ni una aguja en el pajar ni en la despensa ni en el trastero. Decidió entonces que había que quemar los juguetes viejos para poder disfrutar de los nuevos. Hicieron una hoguera muy grande con todos los juguetes y todos se pusieron a bailar a su alrededor.
Como era carbonero y los juguetes eran de madera, luego vendía el carbón que resultaba de la hoguera. Y todos los años igual.
Pasaron cientos de inviernos. Olentzero ya se había independizado de sus aitas y hacía carbón por su cuenta. Un cumpleaños se atrevió a decirles a los galtzagorris:
– ¿No os habéis fijado en que ya soy un poco mayor para que me sigáis regalando juguetes?
– ¿Ya no nos quieres?
– Claro que os quiero, pero hace mucho tiempo que tengo barba.
Como los galtzagorris no envejecen, no se habían dado cuenta de lo crecido que estaba.
– ¿Y qué vamos a hacer ahora con tantos cachivaches?
– Seguiremos haciendo la hoguera con los juguetes viejos.
– ¡Ah. No! dijo Mari. Los tiempos no están para despilfarros. Solamente quemaremos los que están estropeados. Los juguetes que nos gustan no envejecen jamás.
-Es cierto, dijo Olentzero. A pesar de mis canas, todavía me acuesto con mi primer peluche.
Mari sonrió complacida. Su ahijado Olentzero seguía siendo un niño a pesar de tener más de mil años.
-¿Por qué no los regalas, hijo?, le sugirió Mari… si tú no puedes jugar con todos.
Y se dirigió a los seres mágicos del bosque, diciendo:
-Vosotros podéis seguir haciendo juguetes. Olentzero y yo se los vamos a llevar a los niños y las niñas todos los 24 de diciembre para seguir celebrando esta fiesta tan bonita. Le voy a dar poderes mágicos a él también.
Entonces los galtzagorris fueron metiendo en el saco de Olentzero todos los juguetes. Como Mari había hecho un sortilegio, el saco nunca parecía lleno por muchos paquetes que le metieran y Olentzero podía llevar tantos juguetes como los niños le pidieran en sus cartas. Y, Olentzero, bajó por la noche a dejarle un regalo a cada niño. Se puso tan contento al ver a los chiquillos disfrutar de los presentes, que decidió repetir la operación todas las Navidades. Pero, como está tan solo, espera a cambio, que las niñas y los niños le escriban una carta pidiendo el regalo que les gusta.
Y Mari, en su cueva del Amboto, le ayuda a leer las cartas, dejando un ratito, de tejer su interminable tela de oro. Y mientras leen, disfrutan mucho.
Porque leer es muy divertido.
